HDIR – HDMI I2S Receiver
- I2S via HDMI using LVDS (Low Voltage Differential Signalling).
- Any digital signal is supported; therefore, it can also be DSD.
- HDMI transmitter must be LVDS compatible.
- Supports four different HDMI pinouts.
- I2S via HDMI lacks a standard, and even commercial devices use several pinouts.
- Please ensure your HDMI I2S transmitter matches with available pinout.
- Use as a standalone module or DAR 18 v2 input add-on.
- No I/O back-powering.
- Compact 4-layer 68.5mm x 27mm PCB.
Requires the following supplies:
- 5V, max 30 mA.
- Supply via 2-pin Molex Micro-Fit.
- If you use a non-Kaamos power supply, we suggest buying a 2-pin Molex power cable, cutting one connector off, and soldering the wires to your own power supply.
- Power is taken from DAR 18 v2 in add-on use.
Features
The module’s core function is straightforward: it receives digital LVDS signals via HDMI cable and produces single-ended 3.3V outputs. Because I2S over HDMI lacks a standard and uses varied pinouts, the design includes switching logic for up to four configurations—three fixed and one flexible under specific limits that require user soldering. The HDIR pinout must align with the HDMI I2S transmitter.
The pinout is chosen via MODE signals, either through jumper links on the HDIR or by I2C control from the DAR 18 v2.
Available pinouts
The three fixed pinouts are printed on the bottom side of the PCB:

Custom pinout
Custom Pinout 4 is created by soldering small wires between the test points shown on the PCB and in the schematic below. The open switch input test points are DAi (DATA input), WCi (WCLK input), BCi (BCLK input), and MCi (MCLK input). These can receive signals from DATA, inverted DATA (marked above ‘DA’), WCLK, inverted WCLK, BCLK, and MCLK test points. Although signal flexibility and inversions are limited, these combinations cover nearly all pinouts observed online. Furthermore, the three pre-selected options should satisfy most applications. The custom choice is intended only as a last resort, since soldering the tiny wires can be difficult.

The pinouts and naming follow I2S signal naming. Yet the module handles digital signals that might be DSD or another format; please confirm the pinout aligns with your other devices or modules.
DAR 18 v2 add-on
Besides standalone use, HDIR can be used as an add-on stacked on the DAR 18 v2 digital audio receiver.

If you buy HDIR and DAR 18 v2 together, we will supply the elevated header, standoffs and screws at no cost.

Important information on order
- Boards are provided fully assembled and tested.
- Make sure you have the necessary skills to connect the board to your system and most importantly understand what you’re doing. Pay particular attention to ensuring you have the correct power supplies and signal levels.
- Be cautious with supply polarity and level. Incorrect connections can damage the board or your power supply.
- If you need help prior to purchase, please contact us.
Files
We don’t guarantee a perfect match between the files and the board, particularly for mechanical designs based on 3D-models we have not verified. Therefore, please verify any dimensions on the actual board.
